SPRING TRAIL RUN, 36” X 72”, Oil and Acrylic, $2,500.
Walking through Hartwick Pines National Park is a magical experience. The smell of pines is strong and delicious and light filtered through branches bending in the wind, dances randomly as if carrying a swarm of fairies.

This is my take on Edward Hicks Peaceable Kingdom created for The Michigan Artist Gallery show opening May 4, 2018. Edward Hicks’ Peaceable Kingdom inspired me to examine the convergence of people, animals and vehicles in Traverse City that need to get along on our streets, sidewalks and waterways. My experience partaking in this lively facet of our city provided rich visual recall as reference (aided by my photography). My take asks us to all own our part in the health and harmony of our community.
I think the placement of figures in Hick’s work --their shapes and sizes in relationship to each other, to space and distance –is important but it wasn’t always in accurate perspective. Maintaining this integrity/non-integrity required a more deliberate composition. With that, subjects in my painting are placed in vulnerable yet peaceable juxtaposition in similar fashion to Hicks’ placement of animals and people. One major incongruity in my work is an opposing wind direction on the water.
Parallels, intentional and coincidental, can be found: the car, in my work is the equivalent of the Lion in Hick’s work; the dancers and the dog potentially vulnerable to the car. The cat vulnerable to the dog, the kid on bike in Norte gear a metaphor for “The child who came to lead them all” in the Hicks’ reference to biblical passage Isaiah.
An important subtext to Hicks’ work was about the “light” (Christ) within us all and within our world. I wanted to convey a similar tone of warm early evening light and the sense of peace and calm conveyed with glowing water and sky shown through a clearing of the warm cover of olive green trees.
